Until today the magical Amazon rainforest still holds many mysteries and secrets. Occupying much of Brazil and Peru, and also parts of Guyana, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Suriname, French Guiana, and Venezuela, the Amazon River Basin is the world’s largest drainage system. It supports the world’s largest rainforest, which accounts for more than half the total volume of rainforests in the world. There is a clear link between the health of the Amazon and the health of the planet. The rain forests, which contain an estimated 150-200 billion tons of carbon, help stabilize the local and global climate. Deforestation releases significant amounts of this carbon, which is having negative consequences around the world.
Amazon Basin facts:
Our expedition leads us to the center of this vast jungle, to Manaus in Brazil where the adventure begins. Manaus is the capital of the Amazonas state in Brazil, and is a popular ecotourism destination. Almost 50% of the Amazon River’s population lives in the city, making it the primary cultural and economic hub of the Brazilian Amazon. There are countless reasons to visit the city, both man-made and natural. We will visit natural reserves at the city's edge trying to photograph Pied Tamarins and Golden-faced Saki Monkeys. If time allows we will also have the opportunity to admire some of the world famous historical buildings like the Amazon Theatre (Manaus Opera House) finished 1896 after 12 years of construction.
From this bustling city we continue via road on a 3 hour van ride to the Mari Mari Lodge which is situated in an idyllic jungle setting with rivers and lagoons. Our main focus here will be to photograph the spectacular cock-of-the-rock. The male Cock-of-the-rock is an unmistakable sight, with brilliant red-orange plumage, black-and-white wings, and a large fan-like crest that almost completely obscures its bill. This is one of the most spectacular birds of the Amazon. But we also have the opportunity to see and photograph numerous other bird species here including several species of Macaws and toucans. With luck we will be able to get close to the shy Golden-handed Tamarin.
After spending three nights in this idyllic wildlife-rich area we will be transferred back to Manaus where we will board the cozy and comfortable little river house boat Iracema. During the next 6 days we will explore the Rio Negro and the Solimoes River in search of different primate species and Pink Dolphins (Amazon River Dolphins. While standing on the upper deck we sometimes will be eye-level with tree primates we might discover in the trees along the shore. Cruising on these giant rivers with their numerous meandering channels listening to the cacophony of jungle sounds is an unforgettable experience. At sunset you might enjoy a caipirinha, Brazil's national drink, to complete a perfect day on the river.

This adventure requires a low level of fitness. Our hikes will be short. But please be prepared for heat and very high humidity. Activities in this climate are much more exhausting than in moderate climate zones. Please also consider the heavy weight of your camera gear which can can even make the short hikes strenuous. I recommend to keep the camera gear to the basics. The more you carry the more photo opportunities you will miss. Please contact us for advice on what to bring. Although June is the beginning of the dry season it still can rain. And when it does it usually pours. Hence please bring umbrellas.
During my career as a nature photographer I have spent many months in tropical rainforests around the globe. I am especially looking forward to visit the Amazon again, to the screeching calls of macaws, the numerous species of primates, the colors of the cock-of-the-rock and the playful pink dolphins. Last but not least I can't wait to the peaceful and relaxing cruise on the Amazon, Rio Negro and Rio Solimoes with magnificent views from the deck onto the dense forests teeming with wildlife while holding a caipirinha in my hands at sunset. Life can't get any better!
