Many have heard it said that “Africa is magic”. We are here to show you just how true this is and we will start by introducing you to Kenya - a country filled with a beautiful diversification of landscapes, wildlife, plant life and fascinating cultures. For the next two weeks, you will embark on a safari, a Swahili word meaning “long journey” and that is what we will be on from the moment we set foot on this continent. This will be an African safari at its best; with an abundance of wildlife, intense action and loads of excitement. We will visit villages that will envelop us in tribal culture and colors. During a full day in Nairobi we will spend time with baby elephants that have been orphaned as a result of ivory poaching. You will learn about elephant conservation, the dedication of a team of passionate people, and what it takes to help an orphaned calf thrive after suffering such physical hardship and loss. You won’t be able to help but to fall in love with these large babies after having spent time with them. You will gain a new understanding of the intelligence, awareness, the sensitivity and the emotional fragility behind their large intelligent eyes. Our safari starts by taking us north to Samburu, home of the traditional Samburu tribe. We will spend time in the Samburu National Reserve near the Koitogor and Ololokwe mountains. The Ewaso Ng’iro river (meaning “brown water”) runs through Samburu and our lodge lies right on the river where large herds of elephants, giraffe, zebra come throughout the day to drink. Here we will find several species of animals endemic only to the dry and arid northern climate of Samburu including gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe. All three big cats are found in Samburu including over 350 species of birds. We will enjoy an unforgettable afternoon and evening with the Samburu people experiencing their traditions in full color.
When we leave Samburu. we will fly to the Maasai Mara where we will witness one of the greatest spectacles on this planet - the Great Migration. Nearly two million wildebeest and zebras cross the plains of the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara and it is here where we will make our home in a perfectly situated camp for the next four nights. To experience the power, the sights and sounds of this epic herd thundering across the plains is like nothing else in the world. Lying in our tent at night listening to lions calling and hippos splashing in the river below our tents, reminds us that we are in the wilds of the African bush. We will visit a traditional Maasai Village, shop for beautiful handmade beadwork, and learn about the traditions of this nomadic tribe. Your group will experience the magic that this wild continent stirs within each of us.
When we have had our fill, if that is ever possible, of these magnificent herds of wildebeest, we will continue our safari to the south of Kenya.
We will spend the next two night in a camp that is the "epitome of understated luxury", Ithumba Hills Camp in Tsavo East National Park. This camp allows us special access to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Ithumba Reintegration Unit. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) is all about saving elephants. It operates the most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. They have 30 anti-poaching units, have attended to just under 12,000 veterinarian cases and have successfully raised 320 orphaned elephants to date. Our time spent here will complete the full picture of the work of the SWT. We started with the Nairobi orphans on day one of our safari, and now we will see the success and rewards of a lot of hard work, complete dedication, personal sacrifice and so much love.
After we sadly leave Ithumba, we continue on to spend three nights in the Lumo Conservancy which is in Tsavo West and adjacent to Taita Hills. Lumo is a crucial wildlife corridor fostering biodiversity and ensuring freedom of movement of migratory animals, especially elephants. It is a mosaic of open savannahs, rolling hills, riverine woodlands and waterholes. Here we will find all the usual suspects: lions, cheetahs, buffaloes, elephants and more but encompassed in a stunning landscape setting. Lions Bluff, our lodge perched on a cliff with stunning landscapes and a spectacular photography hide on a waterhole for 24 hours of animal viewing and photography, is the perfect ending to an epic Kenya journey.
Coming to Africa reminds us of what it is to be a part of a greater world - a world where being wild is to be free. This where we were born and to come to Africa, is to come 'home'.

The vast open plains of the Maasai Mara are ideal for watching cheetahs and lions hunting. Here one can also witness one of the most famous nature spectacles on earth, the large migration, when tens of thousands of Wildebeest cross the Mara River during the months from August to October.
