Because technology is shrinking our planet and the farthest reaches have become more accessible, novel and exciting adventures are ever rarer. But this expedition is taking us to one of the most isolated places on Earth. We will be immersed in raw Arctic beauty while staying in the comfort of our ship. We are taking you to one of the most remote places on the planet and so whether you are a photographer, nature lover or looking for stunning Arctic landscapes, you will be blown away by Northeast Greenland National Park. Our small ship reaches places that the large vessels can't, allowing for deeper connections, and immersive experiences in the world's most remote and dramatic environment. Imagine turquoise icebergs the size of 10 story buildings, the dramatic calving of giant glaciers, or a lone muskox wandering on a rolling hill painted in all shades of red autumn colors. East Greenland is the birthplace of the largest icebergs on the northern hemisphere. Broken off from gigantic glaciers the icebergs slowly drift across the calm waters of this vast fjord system to the Atlantic Ocean. One of these icebergs was responsible for the disastrous sinking of the Titanic.
Northeast Greenland is the world's largest national park and the 10th largest protected area. The large interior of the park is part of the Greenland Ice Sheet which covers almost 80% of Greenland's land mass, but there are some large ice-free areas along the coast and on the Peary Land in the north. The park includes the Kind Frederick VIII Land and King Christian X Land geographical areas.
An estimated 15,000 musk oxen populate East Greenland. Polar bears, reindeer and walrus can be found near the coastal regions of the park. Arctic fox, stoat, lemmings, Arctic hare and a small but important population of Greenland wolves are also found in the park. Narwhals occur here and we will be watching for them also. Most of the migratory birds will have departed by the time we arrive, but the year-round residents like rock ptarmigan, gyrfalcon, northern raven and possibly barnacled geese, common eiders, black guillemots and a few gulls (Glaucous and Ivory) may still be lingering.
During our 10 day cruise exploring the extensive fjord system of Northeast Greenland NP, we will use zodiacs to take us close to icebergs or to shore where we will hike to the top of moraines enjoying breathtaking views onto glaciers that carved the rocky landscape into deep fjords over millions of years.
We have chosen this time of the year to hopefully witness the mesmerizing northern lights (weather permitting), a visual spectacle reminding one of colored silk curtains gently moving in a light breeze. Also in September the Arctic vegetation has changed into colors of fire ranging from amber to crimson. There is no better time of the year to experience the harsh beauty of Arctic landscapes.
In East Greenland, we have had some of the most exciting encounters whereby on a previous trip a male polar bear climbed onto a small iceberg right next to our ship. The chef noticed the king of the Arctic while peeling potatoes outside of the kitchen and called us back to the ship while we were out on the zodiacs. Since then we have asked the chef to make it his practice to peel the potatoes outside in the cold rather than in the warm kitchen. We hope for more amazing encounters like this with bears, musk oxen, reindeer and other animals that inhabit this remote Arctic landscape.
Nothing is guaranteed on this cruise - it's wildlife and nature! We are very dependent on weather conditions and on luck to spot wildlife. We will however do our very best to make this trip as exciting as possible with zodiac cruises among iceberg giants and hikes to high points with spectacular panoramas.

When everyone is nicely settled in their cabins we will start to sail approximately 18 hours until we reach Northeast Greenland National Park. We will sail during the night to maximize our time in the north.

Overnight M/S Freya (B,L on your own, dinner included)
The next 9 days will be spent exploring this wild and magical place filled with breathtaking scenery, icy landscapes, icebergs and wildlife. The landscapes that we will see defy imagination. We will navigate through a labyrinth of rock formations and small icebergs. We will not have a set itinerary, but rather will allow weather to dictate our path and if we see things worth marveling at, we will linger as long as we like. Jami, Theo and your two polar guides, John and Mette will work together with the Captain to provide you with sightings and places that will take your breath away. For instance, we will diligently be on the close look-out for the magnificent unicorn of the sea called a narwhal. These incredible whales do exist where we are going. We can't make any promises, but we will be watching and if we by chance come upon them, we will be luckier than most. We will also be on watch during night hours for the spectacular aurora borealis. There is nothing that speaks magic like these colorful green, pink, blue dancing curtains in the sky. Get plenty of sleep now, because there's enough on this trip that will cost you some hours of sleep!!
This journey is truly into one of the last great frontiers on our beautiful planet and we are so glad that you are sharing this adventure with us!

For this ship-based trip, a relatively moderate level of exertion is required. You will need to be able to climb into and out of rigid inflatable Zodiac rafts for excursions ashore and have the ability to walk one to three miles over sometimes rough and uneven terrain such as rocky beaches and/or snow. This is an active expedition that requires mobility and good health. Travel via Zodiac may include variable conditions and can on occasion be bumpy and windy. If it’s windy, you may get wet from sea spray. We provide one-piece immersion suits that will protect you and your outer clothing from getting wet.
Travelers must be prepared for any type of weather, including extreme conditions that may involve high winds, rain and snow. While seas are generally calm on this expedition, it’s possible that we could encounter rough conditions which may cause issues for travelers prone to motion sickness. Please consult your physician about medications that control motion sickness. Inquire specifically about the Transderm Scop patch which we have found to be extremely effective without causing drowsiness. Discuss this with your doctor first because it should not be prescribed if you have been treated for glaucoma. There may be newer medications available as well, so please consult your physician.
"There is a magic about the Arctic that is difficult to describe...even for me having lived in the far North for more than two decades. You have to experience it for yourself. Northeast Greenland is one of the most majestic places in the high Arctic."
“The Arctic is indescribably beautiful. For centuries, explorers were drawn to it. It is one of my very favorite places to photograph and explore. Ice is a photographer’s dream. And polar bears, the ultimate predators, live in this icy landscape. This expedition is the ultimate adventurer's adventure."
