Eagle hunters - Snow leopards - Pallas cats
Cost: 6 People - $11,950
8 People - $11,350
Single Supplement: $3000
What country on this planet has the ability to conjure up more mystery than Mongolia? In what other country do horses and camels outnumber people? Mongolian horses and camels were and are the very center of all nomadic existence and have been instrumental in the history of the Mongols. It is thanks to these strong, yet undemanding horses, that the armies of Chinggis Khaan conquered half of the known world in the 13th century, and, thanks to them, mongols are still able to roam vast steppes of Inner Asia practically the same way their ancestors lived for a millennium.
On this exciting expedition, will ride horses along with descendants of Chinggis and Khubilai Khaan on their home turf. You will sleep in traditional Mongolian tents known as gers, made of a circular latticed wood structure covered with layers of thick felt. They are heated by a burning wood stove and furnished with traditional painted furniture. You will also experience a Golden Eagle festival in the far-western province of Bayan Olgii. Golden Eagle Festivals are one of the most anticipated cultural events of local Kazakhs. All year long, both the eagle and the hunter prepare for not only the hunting season but to compete in this festival. Winning these games is a prestigious and milestone event in the life of an eagle hunter.
Wild Focus Expeditions is offering its first trip to track snow leopards in Mongolia. Snow leopards of central Asia, known locally as the “gray ghosts”, are rarely seen. They are masters of camouflage and they live in steep and rocky mountain slopes. Many people have asked us why we haven’t offered trips in Ladakh and Spiti in the Himalayas of India. The reasons are several, but one important reason is that in Ladakh and Spiti, your best chances of spotting the leopards occur at above 14,00 feet (4300 meters) whereby in Mongolia (and Russia), one can find them at 3300 feet (1000 meters).
Their habitat range covers approximately 1.2 million square miles (2 million km2) which is approximately the size of Greenland or Mexico and there are only between 4000 and 6400 snow leopards left in the wild. China contains as much as 60% of all snow leopard habitat and it is one of the most influential countries for its conservation efforts.
Because of their fur coloration, snow leopards can hide in plain sight – right in front of you in the rocks which is one reason they are so difficult to spot. But we will have the best spotters who were used recently on a snow leopard expedition in Mongolia by a BBC film crew working on a snow leopard documentary.
Overall, this will be an exciting and adventurous trip in Mongolia where we will not only hope to see snow leopards, but will have a unique opportunity to ride horses alongside Kazakh eagle hunters – an experience that you will never forget. We will also try our luck trying to find the beautiful Pallas cat, also known as manul (manuul). Like the snow leopard ,it too is a secretive little cat. It is said that they have a “grumpy” look on their faces, but in truth, they are just plain adorable. They have the densest fur coat of any cat and that fur is nearly twice as long on their belly and tail as on their top and sides. This keeps them warm as they hunt on snow and frozen ground. This fluffy coat makes them appear much larger than they actually are. They have unusually round pupils that contract into small circles rather than vertical slits like all other small cats. But like the snow leopards, seeing these cats is NOT guaranteed. Please be patient and come with a spirit of adventure. Nature is unpredictable at best and we will experience some of the most beautiful and remote locations on earth. Please set your expectations appropriately in order to make this trip a trip of a lifetime. Please read the physical requirements (see below) for this trip and let us know if you have any questions.

Day 1, September 10
Arrive in Mongolia through Chinggis Khaan international airport and transfer to your hotel. After an orientation meeting, a welcome dinner follows.(Overnight Shangri-La Hotel, D)Day 2, September 11
Ulaanbaatar
Today is a day to recuperate from our long flight. After a good sleep and breakfast, we will spend the day exploring Mongolia’s capital. We will begin the morning with a private blessing from a Buddhist monk at Gandan, Mongolia’s largest monastery. The 90-fot statue of Buddha stands in this temple. This statue is significant to Mongols as it represents Mongolia’s independence and democracy after the country’s democratic transition in 1990. The original statue was destroyed by the Soviets in the 1930s. Next we will visit the National History Museum. This museum offers an excellent introduction to Mongolia’s rich history. After lunch, we can relax in our lovely hotel or enjoy local shopping before we meet for dinner. In the evening if we aren’t too tired, we will enjoy traditional Mongolian music and dance featuring Khoomii or “throat” singing.
(Overnight Shangri-La Hotel, B, L, D)
Day 2, September 11
Day 3, September 12
Fly to western Mongolian province of Bayan Ulgii
After breakfast, the real adventure begins as we will fly to Ulgii, the capital of Bayan-Ulgii aimag, home to Kazakhs and many other ethnic groups of the western Mongolia. Though Kazakhs’ pastoral-nomadic lifestyle is similar to that of the Mongolians, these nomads are predominantly Moslem. Upon arrival, begin driving to Altai soum, about 120 km south of Ulgii. Arrive at private gers and overnight.
(Private rustic gers; B, L, D).
Day 4 - 5, September 13-14
Altai Soum Golden Egale Festival
For the next two days we will attend the Golden Eagle Festival. This Altai festival was founded by a master and well reknown Mongolian eagle hunter Dalaikhan. During Soviet control over Mongolia (1921 – 1990), Eagle hunting traditions were banned and forbidden. Eagle hunting had been practiced by the Kazakhs and Mongolians since the 12th century until the sport and practice was stopped during Soviet rule. Since Mongolia’s democratic transition since 1991, the tradition of eagle hunting is practiced once again. The golden eagle festival includes not only competitions involving the eagles but wrestling, horse racing and archery.
In the evenings, enjoy a traditional Kazakh meal followed by beautiful Kazakh singers performing for us on the last evening. Over these two days you will have access to horses to explore the riverbanks near our camp and participate in the festival on a horseback.
Overnight in gers. (Private Ger camp; B, L, D)
Day 4 - 5, September 13-14
Day 6, September 15
Ulgii - Khovd
After our last breakfast in Altai, we drive to Ulgii city and continue driving to Khovd city, the provincial capital of Khovd province. We will check-in to a local hotel for one night.
(Local Hotel; B, L, D)
Day 7-11, September 16-20
Snow leopard trekking
Transfer to the mountain camp and spend four full days of tracking the snow leopard in one of the mountain valleys with help of radio signal receiver. Some of these animals were collared over past few years. Jargalant and Bumbat mountain range is a general habitat for snow leopard and scientists estimate some 20 cats in this relatively small mountain area. Following a local ranger, we will be visiting some of the sites, including water holes, where the leopards are regularly seen when they come for water. With help of motion sensor cameras some amazing footages of Snow Leopards were taken at this spot. We need luck on our side to increase our chances of seeing one of these elusive predators, but we will be searching in prime habitat and we will hopefully be lucky as is the way with nature and wildlife photography.
(Ger/tent combination; B, L, D)
Day 7-11, September 16-20
Day 12, September 21
Hovd City
After breakfast we drive to Hovd city (approximately 4 hours). The city was established by Galdan Boshogtu Khan of Dzungaria (Western Mongols) in the 17th century on the banks of the river Khovd. Unlike any other part of nomadic Mongolia, agriculture was developed around the city. Hovd is unique in its diverse ethnic makeup. It consists of 17 soums, some of which have their own ethnic groups including Kazakhs and seven different Mongolian ethnic groups. Local sightseeing. Dinner and overnight at the local hotel.
(Local hotel; B, L, D)
Day 13, September 22
Fly to Ulaanbaatar
In the morning fly back to Ulaanbaatar. Afternoon free for your individual explorations of the city.
(Shangri-la Hotel B, L). Dinner on your own
Day 13, September 22
Day 14-15, September 23-24
Ulaanbaatar - Pallas cats
Over these next two days, we will explore the steppes of Altanbulag (some 50 km west of Ulaanbaatar) looking for the Manuul (Pallas) Cat, one of the least studied wild cats in the world.
We will drive out to the steppes in the mornings and come back to the city for dinner and overnight. During one of the evenings, we will attend a traditional Mongolian performance followed by a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
The habitat of the Manuul/Pallas cat ranges from the Caucasus to eastern Mongolia and spreads from mountains to stony deserts and steppes in Asia and South Siberia. Main conditions for their habitat are rocky outcrops and vast shrub areas where they can build nests and hide. Again, we hope that luck will be on our side as we track this charismactic beautiful little cat.
(Shangri-la Hotel; B, L, D)

Participants on this trip should be very fit and capable of hiking up steep mountain trails that are rocky and uneven. The hikes could last for several hours as we will be tracking snow leopards and also looking for views and photographic opportunities of the mountainous vistas with the eagle hunters. We will take our time, and our guide and drivers will be available to carry camera gear and/or daypack if required.
Mongolia’s tourist infrastructure is far from being developed. Do not expect western standards while on this trip, except for our hotel in Ulaanbaatar or you will come away being disappointed. You can be assured that you will be one of very few people who have travelled to Mongolia. Tourism is new and just now burgeoning and so you will benefit in many ways to be among the first to travel here. Mongolians are extremely friendly and they welcome foreigners. They are proud of their country, their history and are happy to share their culture with you.
The accommodations in the Mongolian countryside are extremely basic, even rustic due to the extreme remote locations that we will visit and will be the equivalent of camping. Please do not expect African safari-type of camping which is considerably less remote than Mongolia. We will be staying in gers (yurt is the Turkish word) that will be set up by our support staff. Gers are portable, round tents covered with felt. Please do not expect the permanent ger camps that you may see on the internet. These permanent ger camps are located in the Gobi Desert which is within driving distance to Ulaanbaatur. Our ger camps will be mobile and the portable gers in our camps are the same ones used by the nomadic peoples throughout the steppes of Mongolia. While using gers, there is no indoor plumbing, indoor toilet or shower. Our wonderful staff will set up toilets outside of our gers and we will have them prepared for us prior to our arrival to make them as comfortable and convenient as possible. We will also supply showers upon request. We will accommodate our clients' needs the best that we can and will answer any specific questions via email.
The hotels in the countryside are also very basic but in general, quite clean. On occasion, you may be able to get a shower with hot water. Please know that this is a very special trip. You are going to be among the first to have the most unique experiences while spending time with the descendants of the great warrior and leader, Chinggis Khaan and tracking through the mountains looking for the most elusive big cat in the world, the snow leopard.
We will have a private chef accompany us while in our ger camps. We will fly in foods and ingredients to prepare meals of our choice and liking. We will be able to accommodate most dietary needs. Trying and eating local foods will only be by request of our trip participants.
For our participants who have an appreciation for beautiful landscapes, wildlife, traditional culture, history, possess a sense of humor, flexibility and spirit of adventure, your expedition to Mongolia will be a trip of a lifetime for you and will be remembered always. Traveling in Mongolia cannot be compared with any other country. The creature comforts that are temporarily missing from this trip will be long forgotten after the trip is over. When we arrive back to our luxury hotel in Ulaanbaatar, you will be in awe of the things you have seen and experienced over the past few weeks. The land of Chinggis Khaan, its wildlife, its pristine beauty and its proud people will be with you forever. We look forward to seeing you in Mongolia.
Expedition Leaders
Mongolia is one of the most fascinating countries I have ever visited. It is landlocked and "sandwiched" between Russia and China. It took a wise and powerful warlord, Chinggis Khaan to alter history. In 1206, he founded the Mongol Empire, the largest and most powerful empire the world has ever seen. Today Mongolia is the fourth most sparsely populated country in the world with more horses than people. Its rich history and enigmatic culture make it an intensely exciting land to explore. Join us to the "Land of Eternal Blue Sky" and discover the Magic of Mongolia.
Mongolia is one of the most exciting countries that I have ever visited. I fell in love with it after my first trip. The culture is intensely rich, the landscapes are stunning and the powerful history of warriors like Chinggis Khaan have shaped Mongolia into a proud, warm, lively and fascinating nomadic people. Mongolia is three times the size of France, there are more horses than people, and a third of the population is still nomadic: I have yet to find another country as fascinating as Mongolia.
